Job Description & Person Specification:

Handsworth Community Choir was originally set up by the CBSO in 2013. We are now a self- funded and independent secular choir with around 40 non-auditioned members of mixed musical abilities, learning with sheet music and by ear. Our continuing aim is to reach out in our music and membership to all sections of our community to create cohesion and to promote wellbeing through the joy of singing.

We perform at various community events including a Christmas concert each year. Last year we took part in Community Spirit at the Birmingham Symphony Hall.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and inspirational person with experience in a wide range of music, who can work with community choir singers to develop their singing and performance skills to take the choir forward. We rehearse from 6-7.30pm on Thursdays in term time in Rookery School, B21 9PY. We are supported by a professional pianist at rehearsals and at our public performances.

The successful applicant should have:
  • the ability to direct and motivate the choir
  • practical knowledge of different styles of music and be open to performing at community events
  • understanding and experience of Community choirs
  • skills to build the choir’s confidence
  • enthusiasm to make rehearsals productive and fun
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • To propose a secular repertoire in conjunction with the committee/pianist, and decide on an annual performance programme
  • Participate in external opportunities and lead and support the choir at performances
  • To ensure that the highest possible musical standards are achieved both at rehearsals and concerts, consistent with the choir’s musical and financial resources
  • To be available for rehearsal before an event/concert
  • To review the performance of each concert with the choir
  • To work closely with the Committee, attend meetings, and discuss proposed concerts
  • To evaluate with and support the Committee in creating imaginative and innovative work appropriate to the choir’s ability and diversity.
Please supply a short CV and covering letter of no more than one A4 sheet describing your approach, methodology and relevant experience.
