Job Description & Person Specification:

Collection Management Assistant

Location: Royal London Hospital

Type: Part Time – Temporary Contract (4 Months)

Salary: Band 4 (£19,409-£22,683 pro rata)

Vital Arts is the arts organisation for Barts Health NHS Trust, charitably funded to deliver art programmes at five East End hospitals. Vital Arts is a leader in the expanding field of Arts and Health, and has gained an international reputation for ambitious and innovative projects, working with critically acclaimed artists to commission site-specific works, including Hurvin Anderson, Amalia Pica, Roger Hiorns, Richard Wentworth, Ruth Ewan, Peter Liversidge, Catherine Yass, Tatty Devine, Bob and Roberta Smith and many others. Vital Arts has a collection of more than 2000 objects, much of it at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

Art Collection Monitoring:

·         Monitoring artworks at Royal London Hospital and Barts (and occasionally other sites) to observe condition of each artwork and document any damage.

·         Build a list of issues (snagging list) that need attention.

·         Check location of each artwork against Vital Arts inventory of the 2000-object art collection.

·         Check for any missing or damaged labels accompanying each artwork; replace with new labels when necessary.

·         Update the inventory and data input.

Art Collection Maintenance and Repair:

·         Undertake agreed repairs to artwork or surrounding walls.

·         Research and undertake any specialist cleaning/maintenance of artworks

Other possible duties:

·         If interested, engage with the written material about the artworks and activities, in which case good written English, grammar and spelling would be important.

·         Visiting sites across Trust where Clinical Staff are requesting art, in order to take photos and gather information.

·         Greet visiting musicians/dancers/performers onto the Wards and serve as a liaison between Vital Arts, Clinical Staff, and the musicians/dancers.

·         Interact with the public on behalf of Vital Arts--e.g. at Tate Exchange in May 2018; administer surveys to patients and visitors, etc.

Person specification:

·         Talent in craftsmanship or technical/practical creative skills important.

·         Needs “a good eye” e.g., a very strong visual sense and visual memory with attention to detail in order to identify any possible damage to artworks or surrounding walls, and to spot any maintenance or cleaning needed.

·         Very handy and experienced with tools, filler, sanding, painting and would undertake some maintenance/repairs.

·         Ideally, would not be averse to undertaking some cleaning of artworks when spillage, dust, occasional vandalism noticed.

·         Experience writing catalogue notes is desirable
