Job Description & Person Specification:

Telegraph Museum Porthcurno

Post: Museum Director
Location: Porthcurno, Cornwall
Salary: in the region of £60,000 dependent on experience

Housed in original cable station buildings and wartime tunnels, Telegraph Museum Porthcurno tells the extraordinary story of the scientists and engineers who, from Victorian times, developed and maintained a world-wide network of undersea telegraph cables.

This network formed the blueprint for today’s global fibre network that enables the operation of the internet, the world-wide-web, and international trading.

The Telegraph Museum is an independent, award-winning museum and holds the only nationally Designated Collection and Archive in Cornwall. The Museum is fully-accredited and is administered by the Porthcurno Collections Trust, a registered charity.

Within the last few years the Museum has benefitted from almost £3 million investment to improve its exhibitions, visitor experience and buildings - and to create a new learning and archive centre housing its Designated Collection.

We are building on the previous investment through a current gallery development programme in the wartime tunnels supported by DCMS Wolfson, Arts Council England, The Pilgrim Trust, Royal Academy of Engineering, and Rank Prize Funds.

We are seeking to appoint a new Museum Director to provide strategic direction and administrative and financial leadership for the organisation. He or she should aspire to support staff and volunteers to provide an exceptional experience for visitors of all ages.

The Director will also have overall responsibility for the designated Archive which houses documents and memorabilia that record the history of communications dating back to the 1870’s. Candidates must be able to provide evidence of fundraising experience, project management and successful delivery of programmes.

They must also be able to demonstrate an ability to maintain excellent financial control. Candidate Brief and application form available at

Closing date for applications: Thursday 8th February 2018.

Contact Gareth Parry (Chair of Trustees) at for more information.
