Job Description & Person Specification:

For more than 200 years, the Royal Institution (Ri) has been encouraging people to think more deeply about science and its impact on our lives.

Founded in 1799 through the wonderful generosity of 58 Patrons, the charity remains based to this day in its original, magnificent, Georgian home in central London.

Thanks to the support of those early philanthropists, over the years, the Ri has inspired generations of scientists whose discoveries have helped shape our modern world. Philanthropy is just as important to the Ri today as it was two centuries ago.

It costs nearly £3m each year to care for our Grade I listed building and historic collections, as well as to offer an exciting programme of public talks, education and outreach activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Whilst some costs can be covered by commercial activities, additional fundraising is always needed to help us meet our ambitious vision. One of the ways we fundraise is through Individual Giving and, in particular, through a Patronsí programme for individual donors contributing between £350 and £5,000 per annum.

The annual patronsí calendar includes 10 curated evening events in the Riís historic lecture theatre or library; plus a number of special patronsí receptions such as the Faraday Dinner and Christmas lecture screenings; and the annual online fundraising campaign. We are now looking for an enthusiastic, well-organised, Individual Giving Manager to join our small development team.

The Individual Giving Manager is supported by the Development Events Producer, who creates the curated event content with the Riís Public Programme Manager. This requires close and constant team working.

About the role

The Individual Giving Manager is responsible for the Riís individual giving programme, taking a lead on gifts up to £10,000 and assisting the Director of Development, the leadership team and Trustees on larger gifts.

The role is focused on four areas: growing the Ri Patrons programme (£350-£5k) which was launched in 2015 and currently generates in excess of £100,000 pa; developing a Legacy programme; increasing the reach and financial rewards of our appeals; and taking the lead on the majority of supporter events.

Working closely with relevant teams at the Ri, the Individual Giving Manager is responsible for identifying new opportunities for individual donor fundraising. They will also be active in identifying Major Donor Prospects and supporting senior staff and volunteers to engage these individuals.

They will have a track record of successful income generation from individuals, preferably in a charity or not for profit setting, with the ability to lead on marketing initiatives across a range of channels in order to inspire support and grow revenue.

They will be a communications all-rounder, equally at ease developing strategies and plans, as getting involved in hands-on project delivery, with the ability to write compelling copy and be familiar with interrogating databases and reporting on campaign analytics.  Interested?

Due to the specialist nature of this role we will continue to receive applications until a suitable candidate has been appointed, but in any case all applications received by 18 December 2017 will be considered.

Interviews are likely to be scheduled for early January 2018.

Applicants must complete and return the recruitment monitoring form along with their application. The Ri is committed to equality of opportunity at all stages of the recruitment process.

The information supplied in this form will be treated in strict confidence and will only be seen by Human Resources. It will not form part of the selection process.
